A special retraction mechanism shortens the length of the lens to just 1.76 inches (44.5mm) when the camera is off, to help make carrying and storing the lens and camera even The RF 50mm f/1.8's knurled plastic focus ring is relatively small but quite usable. The ring turns smoothly with a very long 360° of rotation between focus extents. The rate of focus change is linear – not variable with rotation speed. Manual focusing shows tiny steps of adjustment when viewed closely. Amazingly, this lens delivers impressively in this regard. The Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens is very usably sharp at f/2.8 with a modest increase in softness as the outer portion of the image circle is reached. Stopping down to f/4 results in a sharp image across the frame save the extreme full frame corners. The 28-90 II is very soft wide open over most of the balance of the focal length range. Even on a 1.3x FOVCF body, distortion is noticeable. Barrel distortion at 28mm is corrected by 40mm. Pincushion distortion is present at 90mm. Vignetting seems to be well-controlled, but flare is a problem on the Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II USM Lens.
