That's a problem with the registry key not updating that you've already started the game at least once. Learn that often more heroes sooner are better. As a general rule of thumb, hiring 2 or 3 additional heroes on day 1 is a good idea at hard difficulty. At normal difficulty, hire 3 or 4 extra heroes. It's not an exact science though, so go with your instincts and particularly what you see of the immediate area around your town. A main stack hero 10+ attack/defense or expert air magic, etc will easily do far more than a defending hero. Taking ballistics easily lets you destroy the draw bridge or a section of the wall in one turn, and honestly once you get past the early stage of the game it is pretty much impossible to sit in your castle and win.

ZFR: The original cheats from HoMM 3 won't work on the Complete version. The ones that work on HoMM3 Complete are the "Matrix" ones.
