Tia. You used to be able to assign specific units to specific groups, but they removed it. (They're working on bringing it back, though). go back to 1.6.5. The best thing I have found out now is to make a new control group for infantry in your case. and prioritise the weapon type of the mercenaries (aka shield, polearm).

There was a mod to fix it, the author mentioned it was to do with a bug with quests which reward you with honour: instead of adding the honour to 1, it just adds it to 0 so resets the honour you got from character creation.
